It changes the venue.

The conversation you couldn’t have at the kitchen table still has to happen. It just happens on paper now, with more people in the room. The fight for control now has a deadline. The silent treatment becomes “no response to correspondence.”

Same couple, same patterns, higher stakes. And if there are children, they get a seat at every round.

[A quick word first: if you are not safe, none of this is your priority. Get safe. Everything else can wait.]

The question that keeps you stuck

Most people ask one question on the way out: “What went wrong in the marriage?”

Fair question. But it keeps your eyes on the other person, and the other person is the one thing you can’t change. The good news is you don’t have to. You’ve got plenty to work with on your own side of the table.

Try this instead: “How was I showing up?”

This is not about blame. It’s about the only thing you have any real say over.

The three things people carry out the door

Marriages rarely end because of one big event. They end because of patterns, and patterns have no respect for a signed decree.

1. Communication. Most of us stop talking, or only talk to win. Then it carries on through emails, go-betweens and the children. Different channel, same breakdown.

2. Control. Every one of us has a picture of how things should be: how the house runs, how the children are raised, how a “good” partner behaves. When reality doesn’t match the picture, most of us try to fix the other person. In the marriage it was nagging. In the divorce it’s an ultimatum with a court date.

3. Keeping score. Who did more, who gave up more, who started it. The scoreboard doesn’t get handed in at the door. It gets a new sponsor.

None of these are character flaws. Every behaviour is an attempt to meet a need: to feel safe, to feel loved, to feel heard, to feel some say in your own life. When those needs aren’t met, we get louder, or quieter, or colder. We don’t get wiser.

Why this keeps happening

Two people can live through the same event and walk away with two different versions. Each of us sees life through a lens made of our beliefs, our history and what we think “should” happen. That lens filters what we notice, what we believe the other person meant, and what we do next.

You can’t hand someone else a cleaner lens. You can only polish your own.

And here’s the useful bit: of everything that makes up how you respond to a situation, what you think and what you do are the parts you can choose. Feelings and body reactions follow. Change the doing, and the rest eventually comes along.

What to do instead

Before you decide anything, try four steps. R.E.A.L, the model I use with clients.

R: Recognise. What is the pattern? Not “what did they do,” but “what do I keep doing in this relationship, and what need am I trying to meet when I do it?”

E: Evaluate. Is it working? Honestly. Is raising your voice getting you heard? Is keeping score getting you closer to peace?

A: Adjust and Align. Choose one different behaviour. Not a personality overhaul, one thing. Then check that it fits what you actually want, for yourself and for your children.

L: Lead the REALationship. You can’t make the other person change, but you can lead how you show up. That tends to change the room.

This one is for you

If you’re angry, this might be the last thing you want to hear. Why work on how you communicate with someone you’re leaving?

Here’s why: you’re not doing it for your spouse. You’re doing it for you, and for what’s coming.

You still have to negotiate with this person. Dividing a home, a pension, a calendar. If there are children, you’ll be dealing with each other for years: birthdays, school plays, weddings. The old way of communicating got you here. It won’t get you through the next conversation, never mind the next ten years.

And the pattern doesn’t stay behind. It goes with you into the next relationship, the next job, the next argument with your sibling. Of everything this process will take from you, a new way of showing up is the one thing that is entirely yours to keep.

The marriage may be ending. The way you show up is not. So choose it on purpose.

Where I come in

I’m a Divorce Coach and Mediator. I work with people who are heading towards divorce, or already in it, and want to get through it without taking the old fight into the new chapter.

I don’t replace your attorney. They handle the law. I help you with the pattern: how you communicate, where the control struggle shows up, and how to make decisions you can live with. Clients who do this work tend to arrive at the legal process clearer, calmer and better prepared, which helps everyone involved, including their attorney.

Mediation doesn’t mean sitting across from each other, either. If being in the same room is too much, I can work with each of you separately and carry the conversation between you, so you still get to decisions you can both live with.

If you are heading towards divorce, start there, before you start anything else.

Ready to look at how you are showing up? Book a R.E.A.L session with me, a single focused session to see the pattern clearly and choose your next step.

Something resonating? Let’s talk.

Know someone who needs this?
